Stephen Hawking Says 'There Is No Heaven Or Afterlife ; It's A Fairy Tale'

 on Wednesday, 20 January 2016

Editor's note - The belief that heaven or an afterlife awaits us is a "fairy story" for people afraid of death, Stephen Hawking has said. Although his statement has nothing to do with health, (except mental health) I thought this might create a good dialog about our beliefs that results our action.
In a dismissal that underlines his firm rejection of religious comforts, Britain's most eminent scientist said there was nothing beyond the moment when the brain flickers for the final time.

Hawking, who was diagnosed with motor neurone disease at the age of 21, shares his thoughts on death, human purpose and our chance existence in an exclusive interview with the Guardian today.
The incurable illness was expected to kill Hawking within a few years of its symptoms arising, an outlook that turned the young scientist to Wagner, but ultimately led him to enjoy life more, he has said, despite the cloud hanging over his future.
"I have lived with the prospect of an early death for the last 49 years. I'm not afraid of death, but I'm in no hurry to die. I have so much I want to do first," he said.
"I regard the brain as a computer which will stop working when its components fail. There is no heaven or afterlife for broken down computers; that is a fairy story for people afraid of the dark," he added.
Hawking's latest comments go beyond those laid out in his 2010 book, The Grand Design, in which he asserted that there is no need for a creator to explain the existence of the universe. The book provoked a backlash from some religious leaders, including the chief rabbi, Lord Sacks, who accused Hawking of committing an "elementary fallacy" of logic.
The 69-year-old physicist fell seriously ill after a lecture tour in the US in 2009 and was taken to Addenbrookes hospital in an episode that sparked grave concerns for his health. He has since returned to his Cambridge department as director of research.
The physicist's remarks draw a stark line between the use of God as a metaphor and the belief in an omniscient creator whose hands guide the workings of the cosmos.

In his bestselling 1988 book, A Brief History of Time, Hawking drew on the device so beloved of Einstein, when he described what it would mean for scientists to develop a "theory of everything" – a set of equations that described every particle and force in the entire universe. "It would be the ultimate triumph of human reason – for then we should know the mind of God," he wrote.
The book sold a reported 9 million copies and propelled the physicist to instant stardom. His fame has led to guest roles in The Simpsons, Star Trek: The Next Generation and Red Dwarf. One of his greatest achievements in physics is a theory that describes how black holes emit radiation.
In the interview, Hawking rejected the notion of life beyond death and emphasised the need to fulfil our potential on Earth by making good use of our lives. In answer to a question on how we should live, he said, simply: "We should seek the greatest value of our action."
In answering another, he wrote of the beauty of science, such as the exquisite double helix of DNA in biology, or the fundamental equations of physics.
Hawking responded to questions posed by the Guardian and a reader in advance of a lecture tomorrow at the Google Zeitgeist meeting in London, in which he will address the question: "Why are we here?"
In the talk, he will argue that tiny quantum fluctuations in the very early universe became the seeds from which galaxies, stars, and ultimately human life emerged. "Science predicts that many different kinds of universe will be spontaneously created out of nothing. It is a matter of chance which we are in," he said.
Hawking suggests that with modern space-based instruments, such as the European Space Agency's Planck mission, it may be possible to spot ancient fingerprints in the light left over from the earliest moments of the universe and work out how our own place in space came to be.
His talk will focus on M-theory, a broad mathematical framework that encompasses string theory, which is regarded by many physicists as the best hope yet of developing a theory of everything.
M-theory demands a universe with 11 dimensions, including a dimension of time and the three familiar spatial dimensions. The rest are curled up too small for us to see.
Evidence in support of M-theory might also come from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at Cern, the European particle physics laboratory near Geneva.
One possibility predicted by M-theory is supersymmetry, an idea that says fundamental particles have heavy – and as yet undiscovered – twins, with curious names such as selectrons and squarks.
Confirmation of supersymmetry would be a shot in the arm for M-theory and help physicists explain how each force at work in the universe arose from one super-force at the dawn of time.
Another potential discovery at the LHC, that of the elusive Higgs boson, which is thought to give mass to elementary particles, might be less welcome to Hawking, who has a long-standing bet that the long-sought entity will never be found at the laboratory.
Hawking will join other speakers at the London event, including the chancellor, George Osborne, and the Nobel prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz.

Science, truth and beauty: Hawking's answers

What is the value in knowing "Why are we here?"
The universe is governed by science. But science tells us that we can't solve the equations, directly in the abstract. We need to use the effective theory of Darwinian natural selection of those societies most likely to survive. We assign them higher value.
You've said there is no reason to invoke God to light the blue touchpaper. Is our existence all down to luck?
Science predicts that many different kinds of universe will be spontaneously created out of nothing. It is a matter of chance which we are in.
So here we are. What should we do?
We should seek the greatest value of our action.
You had a health scare and spent time in hospital in 2009. What, if anything, do you fear about death?
I have lived with the prospect of an early death for the last 49 years. I'm not afraid of death, but I'm in no hurry to die. I have so much I want to do first. I regard the brain as a computer which will stop working when its components fail. There is no heaven or afterlife for broken down computers; that is a fairy story for people afraid of the dark.
What are the things you find most beautiful in science?
Science is beautiful when it makes simple explanations of phenomena or connections between different observations. Examples include the double helix in biology, and the fundamental equations of physics."

  1. If you are agnostic, or are questioning, I think you should pick up the book Proof of Heaven, the BBC interviewed the author today. Proof of Heaven was one of the most powerful novels I had read in a long time. I read it after my grandmother passed away.

I was staunchly atheist until I witnessed the death of my grandmother...

She had been having difficulty breathing, we were all around her in the hospital, and dad was sitting next to me. He said something about her having trouble, and looking scared. I told him about Tibetan Buddhist tradition that says you should choose your words carefully around those in bardo (the place between life and death) because it affects the dying person's hallucinations and determines where they are reborn. Dad said that it was interesting, and asked where I learned the tradition, I told him it was from a book I had been studying called "The 31 Planes of Existence" (a Theravada publication). He asked me "Which plane do you think nana will go to?" And I said, "There is one plane where everything is very similar to here, but the difference is that people that passed on are there. There are no big hurtles or difficulties there... it's very much like the Christian heaven. So I think if there are places after this she'd go there as an angel." And papa said, "Yes. A snow angel." When he said that I was looking at her, she took a big final gasp for air, and her body relaxed. I knew she had heard us.

She moved on, and I felt her pass through me. I knew it was her, it was a cold shiver and it felt like a cool breeze passing through me, accompanied with a sudden "knowing" that it had been her. This is the experience that changed me deeply and pushed me towards academic study of the bardo and methods of controlling the bardo. It is the experience I had that made me no longer an atheist, and turned my mind towards giving my mythical thinking a little more credibility than I used to.

    1. Uh-huh, and now you get to be an angel too! Pathetic, none of that spirit crap happened, and claiming to be a former atheist doesn't make your "tale" any more believable.

    2. Mythical thinking is good for the Movies and Cartoons. Not for real substantive discussion. Your blog and push for this material you have posted with a link is seriously an intrusion into real Scientific discussion and probably you are connected to this material as it makes money as the Snake Oil Salesmen did oh so many years ago.

    3. The answer as to where life came from is answered in History. Pangea, the Super Continent that is formed when you put all the Continents together like a Puzzle. Science will tell you that 250 million years ago, before the continents drifted apart, there was one land mass. If you look closer you will see that the Continent of Pangea or the completed puzzle of our continents placed together there is another step that can be taken, it forms a ball. Just like the Government not admitting that Aliens exist, does not mean we are alone in the Galaxy, Just because science doesn't state that Pangea was a ball, doesn't mean it wasn't one. The Proof is looking at the Greenland and Canada and realize that the only way the Cracks can come together is in a ball. So at one point the Earth had no Land mass at all, only water. How is that a conclusion? The amount of water that is Currently on the Earth, without land mass, if it were only a smooth ball, it would cover the entire planet 2 miles deep. Why is this Important? The only way we can form a perfect sphere is in a no gravity environment, proven in the Labs of the space station. The world began as a ball of Molten Rock, spinning in Space. If the the Planetoid Pangea hit the Earth at that point it would have been Enveloped by the Molten Earth and become part of the Spinning ball of Molten Rock. As the Planet was a ball of Molten Rock then like the Experiments on the Space Station it too would have been a perfect sphere, and on a Perfect rotation. The Earth had to be cooled first before Pangea could have become a Super Continent. So if your answer would be a Comet or Asteroid of Ice then why isn't there a Divot in the earths Crust? If Ice was to strike a Molten ball, that ball would solidify at the Impact point leaving a Divot if you will, forming a deep "Well". That doesn't exist on our Planet and something like that would surely be noticed by now. Leaving only Liquid water or a Gas Chemical reaction as the only two remaining Possibilities left. This could only happen with "Help" from an Intelligent being. And God Spoke and it was so..... but Created! No this was a Science thing not a Magic thing, even if our Creator is OUR God, then Our creator is no God.

    4. The final truth is fundamentally subjective. No matter who speaks about it-it can only be his personal experience- but the beauty of this is that after any such experience, that person never remains the same.Only he knows what went through him. The presence is subjective. It cannot be worded in any language.I believe Koneko. I have gone through a similar experience. No point in elaborating what. It will be just another story for the agnostic and just another proof for the believer. Either way it doesn't prove anything.

  2. Science can't explain everything. ....Even they are trying to solve the problems in the nature they will never succeed because that eternal truth is not tangible to our senses. ....though he is a genius in science actually he is another life in this world with impermanence. ....He will be in this delusion until he removes his spectacles of science. ...What ever he did he can't exceed the birth, aging and death which are the ultimate issues for a living being. The reincarnation is introduced to prevent the violation of humanity. If the life is mere a scientific phenomenon why we worry to do good deeds, why we need to pay gratitude to our parents. .....whole community will go in to wilderness. It says that never believe any one without facts and use your day to day experience when you're coming to a conclusion. Ultimately I have to say that scientists are not different from the deers who are running after the mirage. ....!

    1. You say scientists are deer running after a mirage lol, if that is the case then those of religion are rabbits caught in the headlights, they are mesmorised by this strange glow they cannot explain and ultimately don't see the true danger of their thinking, where as the scientist understands the source of the light and the impending doom the rabbit is in... science has eradicated so many religous mindsets like those worshipping the Sun and the Moon just because they couldn't explain what they were... even now we find religion having to make some uncomfortable adaptions to scientific discovery, yes science can get it wrong sometimes but it always holds its hands up, religion on the other hand seems to lack this ability and still follows txt written in a totally different time and environment - you really need to research the areas of say the bible or the Koran etc that have been dropped over the centuries then you would see how ridiculous the scriptures you base your whole belief on.

    2. Lets see. Religion and God believers thought the world was flat. Science proved otherwise. Religious people thought if you broke a mirror or a looking glass or any glass you should be put to death by burning at the stake. That is mysticism for ya. Have you ever read about the Inquisition? That is Religion. Now we have, in America, Donald Trump focusing on the Religious, whom are the fools of the Nation and not adding real value to our culture, to use their stupidity to get him elected to start more Religious wars like the Conquests?
Religions Poisons everything. Christopher Hitchens. Hitch is dead, not in hell, and science cannot prove everything but in almost all cases it has proven IT is correct and your Bible or whatever Religious book is full of flat out inaccuracies and lies and distorted tales of ridiculousness. Go away Science haters. Science is our future and it is the ONLY thing that can save humankind and you do not go to the Preacher for healing, you go to the Medical Scientific Hospital, now do you not? I guess that says it all.

    3. Science is the means by which everything can be explained, or will be explained. The esoteric and the aesthetic to which you allude, are merely human perceptions and the byproduct of intrinsic bio-electrical processes. That is not to denigrate the beauty that humans see or feel, but we are all really just "Processors". We should all embrace the beauty of being alive, for the improbabilities we have all overcome to become sentient living beings is truly remarkable.

    4. Actually science CAN explain everything. It's just that some of the explanations maybe prove to be inaccurate or in need of revision later. In science you can trot out an explanation for some phenomena anytime you wish. It's just that you are expected to back it up with evidence and argument. It's not hard, really...

  3. ALMIGHTY ALLAH created us, and science is creation of human by the Grace of God, and our existence is the reason of existence of science. Science creates assumptions before come to conclusions but ALLAH knows what is going, what will happen, what should happen, what is happened. All that happens in our life (A scientist called it science) but actually all that happen, happened and will happen is the order of ALLAH. Science help you to study/know the secret of existence of world and each and everything. But there is no power except ALLAH who disclose the things to you. If Science is every thing , a scientist should try to fill spirit in human when he is dead or change the parts of human that are not working. It is he (ALLAH) who keep you live for long time and save your from any severe disease. That is your test in the universe not the miracle of science. All that you see in this universe is the miracle of ALLAH not the science and ALLAH disclose the things to you slowly and gradually and when he went. Certainly , there is life hereafter that you will know after death and there is hell and heaven too.

  4. "Theory" of ABC, it is "prediction" of XYZ, "might be" .......... these words have nothing to do with the facts ... if humans started understanding the science of physical bodies, then it does not mean science was not created! Do we know that there is no answer of "why" in physics ... why do two massive bodies attract each other ? gravitational force, why there is gravitational force ? massive bodies distort the space/time, why the massive bodies do so ? there are 4 forces in the nature, why ? why not another ? some flickering of quantum phenomena created the universe (and might be some parallel universes), what caused that flickering ? mankind has passed thousands of years to reach at this level of civilization and scientific discoveries (that basis cause and effect), man also believes that if he does the right the right result will happen. There are billions of reasons that we see all around us happening all together and by chance, no way! How man and a woman became compatible and opposite sexes that can reproduce a new generation and when she gives birth then she can feed the child (no milk before kid gets birth) .. how these two simple things connected by chance ? it was just a small example ... just imagine how perfect our body parts are placed in ... eyes are at the right place with maximum vision, ears are at the best place of listening 3d sounds, and the brain and the heart ...... to name a few ...... how come these foolish ideas raise at the first place that there is no God! can any one give me a solid reason (not sitting on the mountains of theories and maybes) .......

  5. There already is a universal theory of everything but people are not willing to accept it because we have no proof for it, and many consider it fantasy. God created everything. As much as some of you want me to prove it, I would also like you to disprove it. Hawking is nothing more than a brilliant hack. If you read some of his earlier work he writes with authority and certainty that his theories are correct, only to change his mind years later, again writing with authority and certainty. Stating that Heaven is imaginary and disparaging people who believe in it is another one of his misguided theories. He has no way to prove or disprove whether Heaven is real, and he is now old enough that he likely will die before he changes his mind on it.

  6. Science deals with illusions, not reality. If science can explain God, then God wouldn't be God. It's not a matter of God being around yo run things. Everything is a manifestation of God. Only God exists. Nothing else exists. If anything else exists, it's not reality but an illusion.Science itself discovered that Energy cannot be created nor destroyed but only transfered and transformed. Every energy transfer or transformation increases the randomness of the universe. The Bible, like the Constitution, is about relationships. In the case of the Bible, it's about love, sin and forgiveness. Keep your conscience clear. After death, we are going where we were before we were born. There's no reincarnation. Reincarnation refers to illusions. There are no illusions after death. The sins of the fathers is visited on their sons. So, there's no need for reincarnation. Don't create negative energy, referred to by some people as bad karma. Karma is neutral. It's human perceptions that sees it as good, bad, ugly, beautiful and evil.

  8. Stephen Hawking is renowned physicist but seems to give baseless opinion without conducting and experiment to know if Heaven does exist or not. "No after life" is a baseless opinion of a person who claim that he don't fear death but don't hurry to die. He compare human brains to a computer which very different in it's nature. Computer is created by the hands of men while our brains or our faculties as human is incomprehensible even until this days. We cannot be compared to a machine because we are not, our existence is far beyond imagination that even sciences failed to give concrete explanation.

And if you have any self control at all...please don't force it on the still developing brains of your children. Let their brains be fully developed first.

For the ultimate question that we have to ask ourselves at Easter and part of an 'open mind' consideration is, 'Where do we go when we die? 11. His theories/hypothesis on ‘Black Holes’ in outer space is a phenomenon and have given the world insight into the universe and how it all began in theory and from the world of physics who have avoided the issue primarily because it would deal with creation, creation of everything.
The physicists, side stepped this issue as they assumed that they would need to pencil in a God Factor whereas Hawking boldly went where no man ever went before and devised the formulae about dying stars that collapse within their own gravitational field thus creating the infamous Black Holes, These spectacles are where everything in the surrounding area is absorbed, all atoms, all molecules, and even light cannot escape because the gravitational force is so strong hence where the name is derived. However, Hawking, being a true scientist never rested on his laurels because his mind like the universe is expanding and he perceived that if black holes forced everything outside in then there must be a force that is equal and opposite thus forcing everything within to the outside. This is a fundamental law/rule of physics and Hawking knew this all too well but his new theory would be foreboding even for him to unleash it to the world, however his formulae and calculation were precise and exact but still caused consternation among his peers when he revealed.

Stephen Hawking is indeed a special person with a special mind that works in genius mode despite his disabilities visited upon him by the crippling Motor Neurons Disease where almost all bodily functions cease but thankfully it does not incapacitate the mind. MND is a progressive degenerative disease that Hawking was diagnosed as having in 1962 with an accessed life span of 3 to 4 years tops but he is remarkably still with us. However by all accounts he was just an ordinary person who loved sex, drink, and rock n roll often engaging in such normal activity, was only half way up in his class at secondary school, got a first class degree at Oxford, and did his PhD at Cambridge University; got married twice, had two children, and also had two divorces so life battered him like the rest of us ordinary mortals. But it is his extraordinary mind and the way it works that sees him stand out from others with one striking thing that he revealed was that his parents were always supportive of revealing all knowledge and advise him to question all things known and unknown. Perhaps this and his disability forced his mind to operate as it does is one the most ironic paradoxes of all time because without these two vital pieces of the jigsaw of the human psyche we may not have even heard of Stephen Hawking or his work.
Peculiar that or could it be defined by Darwin’s Natural Selection Theory? But like all theories it need to be studied more because nothing is ever the be all, know all, and end all of everything as there is always a missing link, a clink in the armour. A flaw!
There is always one and more than one thus nothing should be wrapped like everything else and placed into a box hence ceasing to explore the possibilities. So just because it cannot be defined or formulated or calculated does not mean it does not exist. Therefore the phrase was coined to think outside the ‘box’ a discipline that Hawking engages but because he is human thus prone to error, will release revelations intermittently without the full investigation and whereas it opens minds, alas we only see a piece of the master jigsaw.

  12. Then why did he say this???
“The laws of science, as we know them at present, contain many fundamental numbers, like the size of the electric charge of the electron and the ratio of the masses of the proton and the electron. The remarkable fact is that the values of these numbers seem to have been very finely adjusted to make possible the development of life.”

  13. "I regard the brain as a computer which will stop working when its components fail."
Well, he may regard the brain like that, but most computer scientists would disagree. (I can't comment, cos I simply don't know.)
Stephen may be an expert in his field but I wouldn't expect him to know how to clear my blocked sink. Likewise, his intelligence obviously doesn't make him an expert on Gods of nay variety.

  14. Hmmm...what I'm going to say will probably offend but here goes - if he was my computer, I'd junk him, not even donate him, as he is very, very physically broken, his components are broken - I want a fully functional computer. I question his no fear as he is using extreme life saving measures for a person who is not afraid of the dark. Check out "C.S. Lewis and poached eggs."

    1. Not really offended. Just pointing out that he said he regarded the BRAIN as a computer. And You telling me THAT part of him is broken either means You missed the brain part or You have a strange idea about something being broken.

  15. Mr Howking is a great scientific analyst. What he says is already in his books.
I am pretty clear since long that life is an event when various favouring circumstances combines together and evolution of various species including human is merely nature's synthesis processes.
The reply to the question that Why are we here in already in my above understanding. We are not here for any cause but we are here as a natural event.
The robust question what is here for us? To read the nature's book of rules.
